TOURISM IN SYRACUSE, SICILY

Nature and the Sea in Syracuse

The climate of Syracuse is extraordinarily mild: one must consider that, in addition to facing the sea, the city is south of Tunisia in latitude.

During the period of industrialization after World War I the natural environment and landscape unfortunately suffered more than an assault, but in recent decades the importance of the Syracuse’s natural heritage has increasingly been revalued, so that today Syracuse boasts in its surroundings two protected natural areas, the “Nature Reserve Fiume Ciane & Saline di Siracusa" (just on the outskirts of the city) and the reserve Oasi Naturale di Vendicari (a number of kilometers away).

Thanks to these areas, a stay in Syracuse can offer, above art and culture, the sea with pristine beaches and lush green oases intact.

To those who want to stay in touch with nature this includes:

Marine Aquarium
(See the dedicated page)

Harbor Crossing
In the summer, boarding from the Marina (Foro Vittorio Emanuele) or from Via dei Mille, in Ortigia, it is possible to take boat trips to characteristic places of Syracuse or a tour of the Porto Grande on a motor boat equipped with a glass bottom to observe the seabed below.

Fontane Bianche (White Fountains)
This is the most popular beach for those who want to enjoy the sea of Syracuse. It can be reached by bus lines 21, 22 and 24, or by car.
The reception desk at the Algilà Ortigia Charme Hotel is available to provide further information.

Ciane / Anapo Rivers
(See the dedicated page)

Getting around by bike
Hotel Algilà offers its guests bicycles for free to get around the city or to reach the beach riding on two wheels.
Those with small children can also be accommodated using the bicycle chairs provided.
The reception desk at the Algilà Ortigia Charme Hotel is available to provide further information.

Oasi naturale di Vendicari (Natural Oasis of Vendìcari).
(See the dedicated page)

Punta del Pero (Bathing Area)
During the summer (between mid-June and mid-September) at prices agreed upon between the City and the Cooperative of boatmen of the port of Syracuse, a service of motor boats that cross the Porto Grande departs from Zanagora Pier in Ortigia, and goes to the beaches of Punta del Pero and Isola Maddalena, in the bathing area of Syracuse.
The Zanagora Pier is located just a few hundred meters / feet from the Algilà Ortigia Charme Hotel: it is easily reached by foot on the opposite side of the island.

Car Rental
Lastly, for those who wish to make trips by car and do not have a car of their own, it is possible to speak to the reception desk at the Hotel Algilà about renting one.
Remember, however, that during the tourist season the ancient streets of Ortigia are, in good measure, pedestrian zones. Hotel Algilà, however, is located along a road that is not closed to traffic, and has convenient parking in the square opposite the hotel.
